The Fiery Furnaces are boring and overrated.

this is hardly earth shattering [Jun. 28th, 2006|02:39 am]
You know? The Beatles are really fucking good.

I know everyone knows that. And that it's a generally accepted fact. But I think because it IS such common knowledge, that I don't really think that much about it.

So sometimes when I listen to the Beatles, and really listen to it...the melodies, the lyrics, the way it all goes together...amazing.

So. I just thought I'd share. Don't take goodness for granted - think about it now and then. Blah blah blah.

"She said that livin' with me was bringing her down, yeah
she would never be free when I was around."

[Current Music |jolene, we almost never met]

Richard Edwards is one of my favorite songwriters, ever.

Oh, you think that makes me a nerd? Well, I don't care. I think YOU'RE a nerd. The man is golden.

Examples:

If my woman was a fire, she’d burn out before I’d wake
and be replaced by pints of whiskey, cigarettes, and outerspace
Then somebody moves, and everything you thought you had has gone to shit
We’ve got a lot...don’t you dare forget that.

Her dignity shone so bright like a light on a hill
And she burned for me, no other man came near the flame.

I was smokin' cigarettes, and danglin' from the hips
of a foreign girl, in the context of the world.
and you came well equipped, with a gun on your hip
and some poison your lips, but when we wake up
in our makeup, we'll be clean, and we'll have nowhere to be.

Paste Magazine's Top 100 Songwriters of all time [Jun. 24th, 2006|03:48 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Music |jeff tweedy]

So, a while ago, Paste magazine had a poll, asking everyone to vote for their 100 favorite songwriters of all time. Here are the results:

The Top 10

10. Prince
9. Joni Mitchell
8. Elvis Costello
7. Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys)
6. Leonard Cohen
5. Paul McCartney (The Beatles, Wings)
4. Tom Waits & Kathleen Brennan
3. Bruce Springsteen
2. Neil Young (Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)
1. Bob Dylan

and here are #s 11-100 )

Naturally, I have opinions about this list.

The top 10 mostly looks passable to me. My biggest question about it, though, is Joni Mitchell. Now, I don't hate Joni Mitchell. I don't even dislike her. But is she really one of the top ten songwriters of all time? Is she really a better songwriter than Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Jeff Tweedy, John Darnielle, or Sam Beam?

I definitely don't think so...but I guess other people did. Numbers one and two would be the same on my own personal list, and the others would be on there somewhere.

Other things that disturbed me:

Randy Newman as #11? Really? I can't imagine him being placed that highly on the list, especially since Paste tends to have a predominantly college-aged audience.

Some of the best on the list are ranked between 81-90, in my opinion. I'm glad that Sam Beam, Parliament, Fleetwood Mac, Dave Bazan, and John Darnielle are on the list, but I honestly would have expected most of them to rank higher than they did.

Sting is NOT better than Andy Partridge. Have you bitches heard XTC? Come on!

Kris Kristofferson at #38? Who are you people? Below DOlly Parton, Al Green, James Taylor, Will Oldham? That seems ridiculous to me.

However, I am very pleased to see Sly Stone, James Brown, David Byrne, Loretta Lynn, Tom Petty, Jeff Tweedy, and Stephen Malkmus on the list.

I think it's tragic that Aaron Weiss is not on the list, but Burt Bacharach is, and that Isaac Brock is missing, while Merle Haggard is present.

Any opinions?

[Current Music |something good.]

So, who told Madonna that it was a good idea to make records after, oh, 1995? (And that's being generous.)

Like A Virgin, True Blue, Like a Prayer -- I can respect those albums.  I don't listen to them, but they have merit and I'd not ridicule anyone for listening to them.

But Ray of Light?  Shit.
Music?  Even worse shit!  Including possibly the worst title track I have ever heard. Period.
And this newest shit?  Shit isn't the right word for it.
God.  I've heard old geezers hacking up better sounds than this.
Give it up already. You're old. You're washed up.  Your music sucks.

And, who the fuck let you take a classic like American Pie and ruin it?  Fuck you for that.  I still haven't forgiven you.  I never will. Seriously.  You should choke on something, and I'm not even kidding.

Stop making music. You make me crabby.

my first musical gift!!! [Jun. 20th, 2006|03:43 am]
[Current Mood |awakeawake]
[Current Music |final fantasy]

Final Fantasy is a boy named Owen Pallett and his violin.  According to Wikipedia:

"As Final Fantasy, Pallett has been noted for his live performances, wherein he plays the violin into a sampler controlled by foot pedals, which then loops back one or more of the previously played musical phrases as he plays additional parts simultaneously. He has also performed with more traditional string quartets as backing musicians.

He believes his work is strongly influenced by his sexuality, saying "As far as whether the music I make is gay or queer, yeah, it comes from the fact that I'm gay, but that doesn't mean I'm making music about it." in a recent interview."

He is playing here at the Firehouse at the end of the month, and I am really looking forward to it.  I've uploaded a song from his album "Has a good home" in case anyone is interested in checking it out.

This is the Dream of Win & Regine

If you like it, or if you don't, let me know. I'm interested. :)

TOP TEN FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

(Note: These albums are personal favorites, not a list of the ten BEST albums of all time.  Most of these are in here because of emotional attachments or their influence on me musically.)

10. The Beatles - White Album
This album. Wow.  It was my first Beatles album, and is still my favorite.  I can listen to it from start to finish at any time, without feeling bored or skipping a single song.
9. Denison Witmer - Safe Away
So closely tied, emotionally, to my jr year of high school.  Beautiful simple melodies and acoustic guitar. Beautiful man. Beautiful lyrics.
8. Chad Allen - You Mean You Knew All Along?
Memories of an era of my life.  Good songwriting, good voice, nostalgia.
7. Margot & the Nuclear So & So's - The Dust of Retreat
Richard Edwards is one of my favorite songwriters - period.  Every song is so perfectly crafted.
6. Johnny Cash - American III
Not a bad track on here...and his cover of "One" remains the most amazing cover I've ever heard.
5. Neil Young - Harvest
Oh, Neil.  This album reminds me of growing up and my father.  "Heart of Gold" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
4. mewithoutYou - (A-->B)Life
If you've ever been around me while listening to this album, you know that I get excited and start reciting every song before it even starts. Some of the most perfect lyrics I've ever heard, and strong emotional attachments as well.
3. Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
The first time I heard "aeroplane", I don't think I closed my mouth until the entire album had finished.  Oh Jeff Mangum, how do you do the magic you do?
2. Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends
I think this album is perfection. Total perfection. I'd not change a thing.
1. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
This is my #1 album, not because I think it's the BEST Dylan album, but because it was the first album I owned, and the first album I loved to death.  That, compared with its cultural significance, makes it untouchable for me.

If anyone would like to share their own list, that'd be pretty great.
Or you can tell me I have lousy taste if you want, I don't mind.

Due to my recent penchant for musical rants and raves, I figured this was probably a good idea. I'll probably upload songs and/or albums to share now and then if they're worthy. Word.
